MAC DST Headshot Makeup 056 Close up Beverly RobertsonGreetings Dynamic Sorors of Memphis Alumnae,

It is such an honor to be elected President of the Memphis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. I pray that I can live up to the legacies left by strong Delta Presidents over the past 80+ years.

Each of you has unimaginable strengths and tremendous talents. I intend to use every bit of that talent by pressing you into service this year. Service is who we are and what we do.

We have so many challenges facing this community and these challenges dictate unwavering service to reframe critical issues and reshape the Memphis landscape.

The theme for this administration is “Building a Pipeline to Leadership.” Strong leadership is critical to progress and success. Delta has always been at the forefront of leadership and we can't afford to lose ground now. The power of Delta is needed now more than ever before. To reinforce the importance of this leadership theme, our work for the next biennium will be centered around the need to:

  • Execute more strategic and substantive programs particularly in underserved areas.
  • Encourage greater engagement of newer members, millennials, and transfers into the chapter.
  • More effectively align programming with community needs and build strong, sustainable partnerships.
  • Develop a strategic plan to develop and nurture leaders: political, educational, non-profit, corporate, sorority, etc.
  • Work to reestablish strong undergraduate chapters.

I mentioned in my remarks after installation that we need to explore implementing Delta Academy, Delta Gems, and Embodi in the 38126 area if possible. That is one of the poorest zip codes in the city. To that end, we have already begun to make progress on this by scheduling meetings with potential partners that are already working in the area, including leaders of the Women's Foundation for a Greater Memphis, Girls Incorporated, and Booker T. Washington High school. Building partnerships, such as this, will allow us to leverage our resources far beyond anything Delta can do alone.

As we advance the work of Delta, we need to hear from and respect all voices, especially some we haven't heard from lately. That's why we are planning a Millennial event on Saturday, July 30th. We recognize that sorors with tremendous experience and knowledge are interested in transferring that knowledge and wisdom to a new generation of leaders. To do so, this new generation must be present and engaged. We must expand and grow our knowledge base and intellectual capital by activating young sorors with fresh ideas. They must be a part of this strong pipeline to leadership.

This is just a couple of initiatives in which we will be engaged. There are many more but I can’t tell it all in one communication.

Sorors, we have much work to do, but we want to temper that work with lots of fellowship and fun. We are the right women, in the right place, at the right time. Join us as we work to

build that pipeline to leadership with a strong, informed and engaged sisterhood that will lead in ways that will forever change our community.

I look forward to working with you and stand ready to assist you in any way I can.   Thank you for your ongoing support.   I know I can count on you!

Sisterly,

Beverly C. Robertson
